Erykah Badu may be a world-renowned singer, but music is only one of her passions. It should come as no surprise that fashion is another. With her new collaboration with Italian fashion house Marni on her ERYKAH BADU X MARNI capsule collection, the 52-year-old artist gets to live out one of her lifelong dreams.

“I always wanted to design clothes. I started with my Barbies and paper dolls then myself in the late ’90s. That’s when the funk took over,” Badu shared today on Instagram referring to her past before basking in the present. “Now I’m one step closer.”

“This collab with Francesco Risso was such a learning experience,” she continued, shouting out Marni’s creative director who accompanied Erykah and her 18-year-old daughter Puma Curry to this year’s Met Gala where they both wore stunning custom Marni designs.

“He committed a chunk of his time to developing the perfect aesthetic for this capsule with me. We borrowed from past Badu – patchwork, silhouettes – and Marni’s championed knack for layering colorful textures,” she spoke on the collection that brought her vintage style full circle with the “IMPERFECT ENSEMBLES” they designed.

“We share the old idea that ‘the beauty will live through the imperfection.’ Thank you, Francesco Risso, for sharing this time.” Badu’s heartfelt words were accompanied by a video showcasing additional photographs of herself by Sergio Cattivelli from the campaign shoot with Puma and her son Seven Sirius Benjamin.

She ended her post with the words, “I have much work to do,” and called Risso “brilliant.” We suspect that Erykah Badu’s first foray into luxury fashion design won’t be her last, and she’ll continue to make her dreams a reality.
