Q is entering his busy season now that his upcoming album Soul,PRESENT is just over a week away from release. He recently released the set’s latest single “NOT ALONE” and announced that he’ll be going on his THROUGH THE SOUL Tour this spring and summer with Baby Rose. With big things on the horizon, the singer joins forces with his tour mate for the latest single from his album, “UNDERSTAND.”
Like everything we’ve heard from Soul,PRESENT thus far, “UNDERSTAND” is steeped in an ’80s aesthetic. Drum machines and synthesizers abound in the production, giving the song an ambient atmosphere reminiscent of songs like Phil Collins’ “In The Air Tonight” or George Michael’s “Father Figure.” Unlike those two, though, “UNDERSTAND” isn’t necessarily romantic as much as it’s empathizing with someone else’s plight.
“When you say you are / Struggling / To look up at the sky / Every single time / When we walk out of fear / It burns us up / But we’re still right here,” Q sings on the lead verse, speaking to a specific feeling while leaving things just vague enough to apply universally. “There’s just something better when / When you try to understand.”
Baby Rose joins him on the second verse, with her unique voice harmonizing alongside Q as she sings, “You understand / When we walk through fire together / Just know / That we need protection / That is bigger than us / Building the trust.”
“UNDERSTAND” reveals a growing chemistry between Q and Baby Rose that first began when the two collaborated for the Insecure season 4 soundtrack and continues to thrive today. It also has us even more excited to see what they do when they hit the road this May.
