Keke Palmer continues to amaze. The actress/singer/dancer/writer/producer — well, you get the point — added mother to her resume this year, but that hasn’t slowed her grind. In fact, her grind might just be hitting a new level. She’s prepping her new album BIG BOSS for release this year and offers us another preview with the release of her latest single “Waiting.”
“Waiting” taps into modern-day vibes of the current R&B landscape, which makes sense since the in-demand Tricky Stewart is involved in the production. The heavy thump of kick drums is paired with loop synths to create a groove worthy of you nodding your head as Keke gets into a tale of a woman waiting for her lover to give her the love she deserves.
“I’ve been waitin’ here patient / For you to show me love / I’ve been waitin’ here patient / For you to be ’bout us,” she sings on the chorus. “I’ve been waitin’, ’cause you haven’t been / The same since I gave you some / I’ve been waitin’ here patient / For you to show me love.”
The video for the track plays this up to the next level, with Keke getting her cell block tango on as a Bonnie who was deserted by her Clyde. As she makes choreographed moves through the jail, we get glimpses of her life on the outside playing the stickup kid as her beau (played by Jensen Atwood) stands by her side. But he leaves her in a crucial moment, and she takes the fall. Luckily, she’s a resourceful femme fatale and, after giving us an entertaining show, exits stage left and walks to her freedom.
