Janelle Monáe ushered us into their new year back in February when they dropped their brash and bold new single “Float.” The jam was a great reintroduction to the musical side of Janelle and an anthem for folks who need a confidence boost. As the months get warmer, though, fans might be looking for a new vibe. The singer’s got you, though, as they’ve just released a slammin’ new remix courtesy of twin sister entrepreneurs/musical artists Coco & Breezy.
What made “Float” really work were the bombastic elements — stacked horns, Janelle’s brassy vocal, rapid-fire hi-hats and speaker-rattling bass. Those all find a home here, albeit in a different way. Coco & Breezy chop up the elements and rearrange them over a shuffling house groove that gives the song a new energy for a new season.
They also make a note to give us long sections of groove so we can float just like Janelle as the song beckons all who hear it to the dance floor. We were already expecting “Float” to be one of our jams of the year, but this remix has us thinking it could easily slide into playlists as the days and nights get hotter this summer.
Slide into the electro-funk-house groove that is the Coco & Breezy remix of “Float” when you press play below. Also, keep an eye out for more from Janelle Monáe as it seems the multi-hyphenate might have more up their sleeve as the year progresses.
