Spring may have recently begun, but we’re already looking forward to the summer months and being outside going to concerts, attending festivals and getting our groove back and on at other music-related events. With SoulBounce being headquartered in the DMV area, one of our favorite places to do all of the above is Wolf Trap located in Vienna, Virginia. The picturesque Filene Center outdoor amphitheater at Wolf Trap always boasts a hefty lineup of major acts every summer and this year is no exception with Black music taking center stage.

Wolf Trap’s blazing summer 2023 season kicks off with a two-night stand from John Legend on Friday, June 2nd and Saturday, June 3rd. That’s the good news. The bad news is that tickets for both concerts are already sold out. Clearly we’re not the only ones who love Wolf Trap and/or John Legend.

Next on the calendar is Ms. Lauryn Hill who’ll come through to celebrate a big milestone for her debut album during The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill Special 25th Anniversary Performance on Friday, June 9th. Tickets for this show go on sale on Friday, March 31st at 10 am local time.

Blues legend Buddy Guy is up next on Sunday, June 11th. Quite a musical combo platter is scheduled for the weekend of Saturday, June 17th and Sunday, June 18th with New Orleans’ jazz great Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, reggae royalty Ziggy Marley and blues and soul legend Mavis Staples all on one bill. Tickets for all three of these shows are all on sale now.

June will end with two legends in one night. Charlie Wilson and Babyface will bring their overflowing catalogs to Wolf Trap on Friday, June 23rd for a concert that will be all the way live with the artists’ mics turned all the way on. Tickets are already on sale and moving fast.

July will bring the diva of all divas Diana Ross back to Wolf Trap on Saturday, July 1st. This show will be a stop on her The Music Legacy Tour 2023 commemorating all the greatest hits of her career. Tickets to see The Boss Diana Ross will go on sale starting on Friday, March 31st at 10 am local time.

Also going on sale this Friday are tickets for reggae superstars UB40’s 45th Anniversary Tour featuring Maxi Priest and Inner Circle on Sunday, July 9th; smooth jazz saxophonist Boney James in concert with Lalah Hathaway and Damien Escobar on Wednesday, July 19th; and what’s being called The Go-Go Explosion with homegrown go-go stars Big Tony and Trouble Funk, Bela Dona and Black Alley who’ll all be cranking on Saturday, July 29th.

Two major hip-hop events are scheduled to happen at Wolf Trap this summer to commemorate the art form turning 50 this year. On Thursday, August 17th, the Masters Of The Mic: Hip-Hop 50 Tour will pull up with legendary MCs Big Daddy Kane, Doug E. Fresh, KRS-One, Rakim, Slick Rick and Roxanne Shante and DJ Spinderella holding it down on the turntables.

Closing out the 2023 summer season for us will be five-time GRAMMY Award winner Robert Glasper with Black Radio: A Hip-Hop 50 Celebration in association with the Kennedy Center’s Hip-Hop Culture Council. Taking place on Saturday, September 9th, this once-in-a-lifetime live event will mashup Glasper’s uber-popular, genre-defying Black Radio album series with hip-hop performed by as-yet-unnamed special guests that are sure to be mind-blowing. This is Robert Glasper, after all.

Tickets for Masters Of The Mic and Black Radio: A Hip-Hop 50 Celebration will also go on sale this Friday, March 31st at 10 am local time.
