New Edition may be in the midst of their Legacy Tour, but they’re making sure to have some fun and connect with their fans while on the road. One of their biggest fans is none other than comedienne and talk show host Sherri Shepherd who welcomed all six members to her popular daytime series Sherri on Tuesday, March 21st.

Shepherd was still on a musical high after attending the Legacy Tour stop in Newark, New Jersey on Sunday night and couldn’t stop talking about the concert and heaping praise on New Edition during her joke-filled monologue. The studio audience was filled with a few rows of elated N.E. fans dressed in matching t-shirts who’d also attended the concert and matched Sherri’s effervescent energy.

When New Edition stepped out from backstage, it was pandemonium. Ronnie DeVoeBobby BrownRicky BellMichael BivinsRalph Tresvant and Johnny Gill were greeted with loud applause, hoots and hollers as they hugged and kissed Sherri and took their seats.

Sherri jumped right in and asked the guys how it feels to still get so much love after being at this for 40 years, and the always cool, calm and collected Ralph Tresvant simply replied, “It’s crazy.” They went on to talk about their history of baby-making music, brotherhood and three-part BET biopic, The New Edition Story.

The hilarious host made Johnny Gill blush when she asked him if they’d ever dated (based on an old joke she told and a resulting rumor), and he flipped it right back on her (and never did answer the question) as a photo of them hugged up was displayed on the screen. After that laugh, the group talked about the importance of their families and pouring into their children. “Family is everything to us. We are actually living our legacy,” Ronnie said.

Sherri asked if they’ve ever wanted to do a Las Vegas residency, and the answer was surprising. Ralph responded that they’ve been talking about it for years, but they just need the offer (read: money) to be right. In lieu of a residency and N.E. getting their well-deserved coins in Vegas, the fellas are thoroughly enjoying their time on the Legacy Tour with Keith SweatGuy and special guest Tank and still entertaining their fans.

“It’s no coincidence that we’re here 40 years later because we put in a lot of work,” Ronnie said to end the interview with one of the most accurate statements we’ve ever heard.

New Edition’s time on Sherri didn’t end with their interview, however. The group returned at the close of the show to perform their classic “Can You Stand The Rain.” Accompanied by DJ Shakim, Ronnie, Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph and Johnny sat on stools arranged in a V-formation on the stage. While Johnny and Ralph took turns on the lead vocals, the images projected behind them switched from sunshine to rain. The staging, lighting and imagery combined to enhance the performance and made it feel like a moment. Sherri, her producer Jawn Murray and the studio audience were all mesmerized and rightfully gave New Edition the standing ovation they deserved.
