We must admit that Jidenna got us a little open when he dropped his most recent single “BLUSH” for our listening pleasure earlier this month. We’ve only had a couple of weeks to get accustomed to the song’s laid-back vibe, but the classic man is already back with something new and he’s bringing original funkateer Bootsy Collins along for the ride on “SAFE.”
“SAFE” falls within the same theme as “BLUSH,” with Jidenna showing off his vulnerable side when it comes to relationships. He’s tapping into his vocal ability more, though, as he juxtaposes his falsetto with the song’s thick layers of smoky funk. It’s a winning combo that captures the sensual and intimate lyrics.
Jidenna sings about the way his lady makes him feel with a little help from spoken ad-libs courtesy of Bootsy himself. Their back and forth gives the track a fun feel while still keeping things sexy. That’s especially true of the simple-but-cheeky chorus, on which Jidenna sings, “I’m only saaaafffeee / When I’m insssiiiddee / You.”
As mentioned before, Jidenna has a new album on the way that he’s managed to remain tight-lipped about thus far. Now that he has two singles out in the ether, it’s only a matter of time before he starts spilling on what he’s got in store. Until that moment comes, however, get funked up with him and Bootsy when you listen to “SAFE” below.
