Some people are able to smoothly segue from a friendship into a relationship, make it work and even live happily ever after. However, sometimes folks are better off staying just friends instead of trying to become something more and wrecking the friendship in the process. It’s a tale as old as time, and Saint Harison taps Tiana Major9 to help him give voice to friends who venture out of the friend zone and regret their entanglements on the single “homies.”
Producers DiGenius, Akeel Henry and Jack Rochon lay down a laid-back sound bed of guitar, bass, percussion and finger snaps to set the tone. The soulful Brits take turns expressing their feels and singing their faces off on the emotional ballad.
Saint is first on the mic. “Good vibes, drunk night / Put your hand on my right thigh / Now I / Went so blind I forgot about that thin line / Like why?” he sings about getting caught up and crossing the line from friend to lover. Unfortunately, instead of basking in the afterglow or feeling the warm fuzzies of a new relationship, he’s a ball of confusion.
Tiana, meanwhile, wears her heart on her sleeve during her verse. “Such a lover girl / I fall too quick / Put my heart over matter, it shattered again,” she shares, her thoughts consumed with feelings for her friend who doesn’t feel the same. “Friends don’t do what we do,” she concludes.
The singers break it all down on the chorus. “I think we shoulda just stayed homies / Shoulda never let you in / But now I’m in my feelings / I really wanna go back to being just friends,” Saint and Tiana sing individually after their respective verses before uniting their passionate wails on the chorus at the song’s peak.
“homies” is only Saint Harison’s second single ever. He made his official debut with the song “why didn’t you call???” last November after making a name for himself on social media and catching people’s attention with his golden voice and bright pink hair. Both tracks will be included on his debut EP scheduled for release this spring that will share “the tale of falling in and out of love.” With what we’ve heard thus far, we’re sold.
