With another Valentine’s Day in the books, some find themselves with a renewed sense of motivation to keep the love going all year round. For others, however, Cupid’s arrow may have misfired, and it is now time to make their exit. For her latest single “Hurts,” singer/songwriter/guitarist Mychelle captures all the feels of a relationship that’s run its course.
Co-produced by Mychelle and Hugo M. Handy, she sings of the internal battle one faces between holding on and completely letting go of the hopes and dreams once placed in your partnership. Her tone oozes with heartbreak as she sings, “Yeah it hurts, yeah it hurts, yeah it hurts because it’s over now / And what’s worse is that maybe deep down we could’ve worked it out / But something is telling me to listen to my doubts.”
Released in tandem with a music video, the Thea Gajic-directed capture will resonate with viewers as we watch lead actress Abi Corbett cycle between romantic bliss and the struggle to find peace in being single again. Luckily, she has the support of her girlfriends who allow her to vent, be silly and surround her with love, helping her find her way. By the end, she flourishes in her new beginnings as her ex, played by actor Kieran Taylor-Ford, reappears for a civil reunion.
Regarding the concept for her second collaboration with Gaji, Mychelle shared in a press release, “After seeing how amazing the ‘Tightrope’ video turned out, I was very keen to work with her again. We used actors instead of me being the lead. I think this was the way to go as they have the ability to convey the emotions of the song much better than I probably could.”
“Hurts” serves as the second single from Mychelle’s forthcoming EP and follows her previous release “Tightrope.” If you’re nursing some heartbreak of your own, add Mychelle’s “Hurts” to your “in your feelings” playlist from your favorite digital music platform.
