Janelle Monáe has been snatching wigs and trophies on the acting front, with her latest star-making turn coming from last year’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. While we’re loving everything that Janelle is doing onscreen, we’re admittedly missing the magic that the multihyphenate made on wax with past works like Dirty Computer and The ArchAndroid. It looks like she felt the same way, as she’s making her musical return with her brand new single “Float.”

“Float” was first teased on her socials all the way back in December as Janelle marked her birthday, but we weren’t ready for the full scope of the song’s sound. The song is built on a soulful sample that’s amplified with skittering hi-hats and additional horns and instrumentation from Seun Kuti + Egypt 80, giving the track an epic feel.

Monáe, meanwhile, takes the time to talk her ish and reintroduce herself in one fell swoop. The song’s verses feature her singing and rapping, letting us know that she’s changed up her style and demeanor over the years. As she brags and boasts, she backs it up with undeniable swagger that leads us to the chorus and her motto for dealing with those who simply aren’t on her level. “Float, float on ’em, I float on ’em, just float / They hangin’ on to that goose down in my coat / Float on ’em, I float on ’em, just float / I don’t step, I don’t walk, I don’t dance, I just / Float,” she confidently sings.

“Float” is without a doubt a vibe and has us wondering what Janelle Monáe has up her sleeve for this new era. Check out our first taste of what's to come when you press play.
