Soul sister duo The Amours are back with their first release since 2019 when they blessed us with their lovely debut EP Mon Amour on Morton Records. No longer signed to their former boss PJ Morton’s label, the ladies have been independently working on new music throughout the pandemic, and now sisters Jakiya Ayanna and Shaina Aisha are ready to share their work with the world. The sweet-voiced songbirds continue tackling matters of the heart and are a little salty with a shady lover on the single “Don’t Deserve.”
The Amours know that something isn’t right in this relationship with both singers taking on the role of a woman frustrated with the games her man is playing and the lies he’s living. She has been up all night waiting for him to come home, but the writing is on the wall: she deserves better and he deserves to be kicked to the curb and sent back to the streets. “You’ve been faking on me / I don’t, I don’t, I don’t deserve it,” Jakiya and Shaina sing on the chorus.
The sisters seamlessly take turns on the vocals and even fit in a slick interpolation of lyrics from Beenie Man’s dancehall classic “Who Am I” on the pre-chorus. “Sim simma / Who took the keys to my bimma / Who put my heart on rental? / It’s no winners / Just cold winters / I’m done with him,” they sing in unison on the R&B slow jam produced by DJ Camper. He is behind the boards on “Don’t Deserve” with co-writing duties shared between MidLo, Jakiya and Shaina.
“Don’t Deserve” is the first single from The Amours’ as-yet-untitled new EP. The man who they are singing about doesn't deserve them, but we sure do. While we continue to sing their praises, listen to “Don’t Deserve” below, peep the visualizer and plan to add more of The Amours to your playlists and music collections in the coming months.
