Last year was one of the best years for R&B in recent memory. Everyone from old favorites to new jacks came correct with solid releases. Included in that number is singer-songwriter DIXSON whose album 004DAISY was one of the dopest projects to drop in 2022. The album hasn't left heavy rotation since its September release, but it’s been the sexy-as-hell song “BARELY” that’s really had us in a chokehold. Now the Anikan & Vader co-produced track has gotten a quirky music video.
DIXSON makes his directorial debut with “BARELY” with an assist from co-director Khairi Christopher. Of course, he also stars in the clip and is joined by a colorful cast of characters played by Enoch King, Jay Carter and Wysenia Jones in the role of “Daisy,” the baddie who has DIXSON shook.
The creative capture begins with DIXSON being kidnapped by one of Daisy's henchmen. She has the singer under surveillance and watches his every move. DIXSON gives her a show, though, singing the song's tantalizing lyrics to her through the camera and to a Catholic priest inside a confessional. The priest listens to his rawdacious ramblings and is led to the DAISYFANS app where he sees for himself why DIXSON is in such a tizzy.
That amusing scene is interrupted by Daisy, however, who suddenly appears in the priest’s place with a gun pointed at DIXSON. Unfortunately, our leading man meets his maker and we soon see him laying in a coffin while Daisy and the priest stand over him. In one final comical moment, DIXSON almost gives the priest a heart attack when he rises from the dead when the song gets good to him before taking his last breath.
The clip for “BARELY” is only the second visual from 004DAISY following the video for “CHERRY SORBET” featuring Sevyn Streeter that dropped last August. Now that “BARELY” has gotten the visual treatment, DIXSON is on a roll with another video (that was actually shot on the same day) soon to come. He hasn’t shared what song from 004DAISY will be the next to get the visual treatment, but he’s got a lot of fire to choose from.
