2023 is looking like a momentous year for R&B lovers. Not only are many of our faves preparing to thrill us with their latest work, a few of our legends are also making their grand returns. One of them is the illustrious Anita Baker. She'll be embarking on tour starting next month to mark the 40th anniversary of her debut album The Songstress. Baker also promised fans new music this month, sharing that something new would drop on January 5th. That deadline has, of course, come and gone, but she's not leaving us hanging. Instead, she took to Twitter to offer up a preview of what she's got cooking.
On Monday (January 9th), Anita shared a snippet of a song she's been working on in the studio on her Twitter. Giving props to inspirations like Sarah Vaughn, Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Missy Elliott and Beyoncé, the singer revealed her own jazzy, soulful new creation. The clip, of course, was classic Anita. Beautifully arranged piano and strings poured through the studio's speakers in the clip and were soon followed by the singer's signature contralto.
The songstress sings of fighting on love's battlefield and surrendering to the love of her man, which already sounds like poetry to our ears. Then, just before the clip ends, we get a taste of a beautiful, lush chorus like only Anita Baker can do. It's giving top-tier quiet storm, and we honestly just want to hear more.
Baker stopped short of revealing a song title and release date, but we have a feeling that information will be coming soon. Until then, we'll be playing this short snippet on repeat while we prepare ourselves to fall in love with Anita Baker all over again. Get caught up in her rapture when you check out the short preview below.
