Songstress iyla has been keeping the musical blocks hot all year with a succession of singles. While the tracks — "Sad B***h, Bad B***h," "FOH" and "2LATE" — have been jams that emphasize her unique approach to melding pop and R&B, they have yet to result in the announcement of a new project. It doesn't look like the songstress is ready to reveal her cards just yet, either, but she is unleashing a new track with her Benny The Butcher collaboration "Lost Me."
The minute that "Lost Me" begins playing, you can't help but notice that it interpolates the memorable chorus from The Roots' 1999 hit "You Got Me." It's not a straight-up sample, though, as she and producer Kadis run it through their own filter to speak to a relationship on the rocks.
"If you are worried bout where / I been and who I saw / If you keep worryin' bout where / I went and how I got off," she sings. "You should be worried bout him / Who I've been sitting down on / If you're worried, don't worry you already lost me."
The rest of the song finds iyla giving us a sundry list of why she's already checked out from this dead-end relationship. Benny, meanwhile, calls her out for wanting a love that's like Ciara and Russell Wilson when their love is more akin to Biggie and Faith Evans, even taking the time to crib a line from "Get Money" to get his point across.
The stylish black-and-white video takes borrows from 1940s film noir tropes and mixes them with iyla's exaggerated glam sensibilities. The result is visually stunning, giving the singer an air of mystery and allowing Benny the ability to flex his bravado while also revealing the background workings of video and photo shoots.
"Lost Me" is iyla's fourth single of the year and ends her 2022 on a good note. Here's hoping that the new year brings with it some new-new from the singer (perhaps even her official debut full-length album).
