Gene Noble is poised to make 2023 his. The in-demand background vocalist and singer-songwriter will finally release his long-awaited next project, an EP entitled Feel A Way, in the first quarter of the new year. Before that, though, he ends 2022 on a high note with the EP's lead single "Whatever It Is" complete with a music video.
On "Whatever It Is," Gene is in pursuit of love or a facsimile thereof. He's ready for it and all that it entails and is willing to roll the dice with a potential love interest. He details some of their moments in love in the lyrics.
"Escalated quickly to the point I called you soul mate / You're so many things all into one I call you combo plate / Whatever they call us, baby, I'll take / Whatever it is," Noble sings from his heart and soul. Throughout the song, he flaunts his enviable vocal range, effortlessly moving from his soaring falsetto to his roaring bass.
Noble is on the move in the visual for "Whatever It Is." Director Ashley Braithwaite filmed the piece on location in London, Paris, Hamburg and Amsterdam while he was on tour. Her camera follows Gene enjoying his solitude around the various cities and captures a few locals in love.
Braithwaite brought Noble's vision for the video to life. "I've been touring the entire year, which means most of my time has been spent in other countries by myself. The visual is a depiction of me as an observer of love in many forms. Looking for that connection, whatever that connection is," he said about the clip's concept.
The release of "Whatever It Is" follows two recent covers that Gene dropped in November – his stellar takes on Jazmine Sullivan's "Lost One" and Kehlani's "Everything." It's been eight years since he dropped his first and only project, the album Rebirth Of Gene, so his forthcoming EP is not only long overdue but will be a welcome addition to his discography.
