In an era of surprise album drops and truncated release cycles, Yuna has kept fans’ attention all year with the rollout of her fifth album, Y5. After Covid and the pandemic took its toll on her both personally and creatively, she decided to approach her craft differently. Yuna decided to gift fans with a series of EPs consisting of bite-sized offerings of three or four tracks each, culminating in her latest, Y4. While some have expressed annoyance regarding this release strategy – which Yuna had quite a clapback for – her true fan base knows to let an artist work and has received each release with gratitude.
Her latest installment, Y4, is a succinct encapsulation of emotion with just enough bounce to take us into the cooler months. The project kicks off with the metaphoric “Make Believe,” co-written by Yuna and Itai David Shapira and produced by Shapira under the pseudonym Biako, where she explores the distress that sometimes accompanies undying devotion.
Next up is the lead single “Fool 4 U,” which dropped alongside a brilliant ’90s-style visual directed by Yuna’s husband, filmmaker Adam Sinclair. Over the sultry Biako and Pierre Jamerson-produced track, she tells the tale of elusive love singing, “I’m just a fool for you / Longing for a lost love / Asking the whole wide world / Baby, yeah, why can’t I have you?”
Yuna tops off the triad with “Relax Your Mind,” co-written with Jamerson who co-produced the song with naz.. Here she paints a picture of two lovers stealing away from it all. Though some time has passed and things have changed, the chemistry remains.
These latest bits and pieces of Yuna’s heart and soul on Y4 join Y1, Y2 and Y3 before she compiles all of the EPs together on Y5. The complete 15-song album will be released in November. Stream Y4 and watch the “Fool 4 U” visual below.
