Known primarily as a saxophonist, Saxappeal introduced us to his vocal talents this past May on his latest single “Stay Here.” In addition to playing his instrument on the song, he sang his way into our R&B-loving hearts. The track was released with an accompanying visualizer, but he’s back with a relatable video about the struggles of budding love and making it last.
“Stay Here” is a cautionary tale about pacing yourself in a new relationship. The video for the single, which was filmed by Akil and edited by Snipes, opens with an alarm rousing a sleepy Saxappeal for an early morning workout in his hotel. As he makes his way to the gym, his new love interest is heavy on his mind.
In the next scene, we watch the object of his affection walking seductively into a lobby before the camera cuts to him in a bar sipping Courvoisier and listing her physical attributes as he ruminates on the relationship. Saxappeal is visibly emotional while adamantly refusing to be hurt again. He doubts he can fall in love right now with the ghost of old hurts still haunting him.
Returning home from the road, his “Honey, I'm home” moment quickly goes south as his hug is rebuffed by his lady. An argument ensues, and he questions his ability to put in the work this relationship demands. Their disagreement doesn't last for long, though, when we see the couple snuggled up on the couch in coordinating ’90s-themed hoodies. The fight behind them, Saxappeal figures out how to make things work.
The scene cuts back and forth between Saxappeal serenading his lady with a sexy sax solo and the enamored couple walking along Detroit’s famed River Walk and sitting in front of a firepit. After wrestling with his ghosts and fears, he comes out as the winner in the end.
A lesson in making a new love last has arrived on screen just in time for cuffing season. Watch the video for Saxappeal’s “Stay Here” below.
