Ten years ago, the Robert Glasper Experiment changed the game when they dropped their album Black Radio. The set brought together a who's who of R&B, hip-hop and jazz, melding their talents together to celebrate and explore the breadth of Black music. Needless to say, the album became an instant classic. To commemorate a decade passing since the album's release, Blue Note Records is reissuing the set in a 10th anniversary deluxe edition that includes the original album, unreleased tracks and songs from the EP Black Radio Recovered. With the set's arrival imminent, they're also offering up "Twice," which was previously a Japanese bonus track.
"Twice," of course, is a cover of Little Dragon's modern standard from their self-titled debut album. While the Robert Glasper Experiment was known to cover the track during live shows, the song wasn't originally on Black Radio (though a remix with Solange was found on the Black Radio Recovered EP). This unreleased version, like the LD original, ruminates where that remix swings. Robert Glasper works the pensive piano melody while Casey Benjamin takes on the lead vocal with a haunting vocoder performance. The distortion of his voice takes the song different places, making the dour mood that hangs over the song all the more tangible.
"Twice" won't be the only bonus track previously unavailable that listeners will be getting when the Black Radio 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition arrives on October 28th in digital, CD and vinyl formats. The deluxe edition will also include "A Love Supreme" (which served as the album's iTunes bonus track when it was first released) and original song "Fever" (which served as the set's European bonus track).
You can listen to "Twice" right here and then peep the entire tracklist for the 3-LP vinyl and 2-disc CD release of the Black Radio 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition, which will also come with a booklet of rare studio photos and rewritten liner notes by Robert Glasper himself, when you hop below.
