Mariah Carey is still celebrating her 1997 album Butterfly and continuing to roll out content to support its 25th Anniversary Expanded Edition. Earlier this week she premiered the documentary "Another Taste of Honey" chronicling the making of the "Honey" music video, and now she ends the week with the official visual for her updated version of "The Roof" featuring Brandy.
Mimi invites us back to The Butterfly Lounge into the recording session for "The Roof (When I Feel The Need)." The setting was previously used for her Apple TV+ Christmas special recorded last year (there's a fully decorated Christmas tree in the background that you can't miss), but the video doesn't have a holiday vibe.
Instead, we watch as Mariah, Brandy and a few musicians put in light work to record this revamped track. Solo scenes of the ever-fabulous diva rocking headphones and cutting her vocals in a few relaxed looks are seamlessly blended in with footage of Brandy in the booth adding her vocal flourishes to the track and the two icons singing, writing and vibing off of one another on the couch. Watching this, it's clear that they had quite a time.
“'The Roof' is one of my favorite songs from #Butterfly, so when we decided to redo it in The Butterfly Lounge, I had to ask one of my favorite singers ever, Miss @brandy to sing it with me!" Mariah gushed on Instagram. Brandy kept that same energy on her IG, writing, "Love you @mariahcarey – so honored, overjoyed and humbled to be a part of a body of work that changed my life."
Although the video for "The Roof (When I Feel The Need)" isn't the flashy production that the visual for the original was, we love any opportunity to be a fly on the wall watching Mariah in her element. And watching Mariah and Brandy together? More of this, please. Until that particular wish gets granted, view their collaboration in "The Roof (When I Feel The Need)" below, and, if you're feeling nostalgic, keep scrolling to watch the original video for "The Roof" featuring Mobb Deep, too.
