Earlier this year, Emeli Sandé released “Brighter Days,” a single from her latest album, Let’s Say For Instance. The song and visual were joyous and vibrant, effusing a newfound hopefulness and happiness during the lingering pandemic. Well, now we know why Emeli was so giddy. The prolific British singer-songwriter has found love and celebrates it on her new single “When Someone Loves You” featuring the one and only Nile Rodgers.
Sandé is jubilant about this new love and puts how good it feels into words. “Hard to describe what's happening / My heart, it flies, my soul, it sings / Found someone to hold who understands / To call my own, to hold my hand,” she sings.
Her perspective on life has changed for the better and even nature has noticed as the stars align in the sky and birds chirp new melodies. If the chorus is any indication, she is over the moon and ain’t coming down no time soon. “There's no other feeling quite like it / I just can't control my excitement, oh / Ain't it just the greatest thing / When someone loves you (loves you),” she exclaims.
At the heart of the uptempo dance track is a slamming Nile Rodgers bass line, reminiscent of Chic hits such as “Good Times” and “Le Freak.” The bridge features a killer solo that gives the living legend the spotlight he deserves. The instrumentation has us up on our feet and waving our arms in the air like we just don't care.
The accompanying animated visual directed and animated by Luke Colling takes the bliss and harmony Emeli feels straight to an intergalactic dance floor. The groovy, discotheque in space-themed video is filled with vivid colors, vibrant lights and carefree dancers in silhouette. The camera focuses on a female avatar dressed in a mini dress with go-go boots dancing and singing as she struts toward a stage. There we see Nile Rodgers' avatar killing it on bass with his signature Kangol, tinted glasses and locs. Their disco ball heads a clear nod to the genre and era. From scene to scene, the lyrics flash across the screen in bold colors and fonts as the party moves from the LED dance floor to a spinning vinyl record and back with a galaxy of stars as the backdrop.
