DOMi & JD BECK are carefully creating a lane for their unique sound that marries jazz, soul, funk and other musical elements. Signed to Anderson .Paak's new label, the duo impressed with their debut single "SMiLE" and subsequent tracks "WHATUP" and "THANK YOU." Now the twosome have linked with AP for new single "TAKE A CHANCE" and its video.
Anderson is a big presence on "TAKE A CHANCE" as he provides most of the song's vocals. He opens the song with a rap that sets the scene while playing off the unconventional drum rhythm and musical arrangement that sets the track off. He pours out his heart as he asks that his lady take him back in her loving arms. As things come to a more traditional rhythm, DOMi & JD BECK join him on the chorus.
"Hold on, just let go of who I used to be / Right now, I need you to take a chance on me," they sing in harmony on the chorus. "You've heard it before / So this time, I'll let the actions speak / Right now, I need you to take a chance on me."
The track's visual, which continues the tradition of Anderson directing their videos, finds the trio making runs in quirky outfits on a road trip. Their things are eventually stolen by a couple criminals, leading to an exciting chase where they catch the fumbling bandits and get their things back.
But the story doesn't end there, as we see them back on the road again, eventually arriving at their destination where they make a trade as the song's rhythm switches to a drum 'n' bass feel. After the peculiar council gets to the jewels and cash they've brought them, they finally give them what they need when DOMi presents them with the real treasure — a vinyl copy of the duo's debut album.
The left-of-center musical approach that DOMi & JD BECK and Anderson .Paak bring to this song and video is exemplary of the what we've gotten from the twosome thus far. We can only imagine what we'll have in store when their debut Not Tight arrives on Friday, July 29th.
