As a part of their commemoration of AAPI Month, Spotify tapped Vietnamese-American singer-songwriter thuy for their Spotify Singles series. The Bay Area native and current Los Angeles resident decided to reimagine her 2021 single "universe" from her EP i hope you see this and cover Tamia's 1998 classic “So Into You.”
For her updated spin on “universe,” thuy totally flips the script. The slow tempo of the original ballad, driven by a melodic guitar riff backed by a drum beat and keys, is replaced by a decidedly more EDM sound produced by DTB. The tempo is increased and the track is switched up with synth, thumping kickdrum, drum machine and timely finger snaps driving the song. The original may have been made for slow dancing with your loved one, but the "universe (DTB Remix)" is crafted for the dance floor.
The heartfelt lyrics were beautifully written by thuy, Charles Charron and DTB. They paint the story of someone who has been through some recent challenges but has finally found a mate who meets their needs. "Just hold me close / You keep me afloat / With you I feel stronger," thuy proclaims on the chorus.
thuy keeps the party going and the love flowing on her rendition of "So Into You." Her cover should satisfy most fans of Tamia's original as she and her band do it justice vocally and musically. thuy’s voice is certainly different from Tamia’s, but her vocals are a good match to take on this song and she delivers a solid performance. Musically, the bass line is a little more pronounced and the guitar riff and keys are jazzier, which adds a nice touch.
Deciding to remake “So Into You” was an easy choice for thuy. “I grew up listening to '90s and '00s R&B, so when I got the opportunity to do a Spotify Singles cover, it was a no-brainer to cover Tamia’s 'So Into You,'" she stated in a press release. “This is a song that I’ve been singing since I was a teenager, and it used to make me feel like I was in love though I had never been in a relationship before.”
These Spotify Singles are a good look for thuy, who released the single "inhibitions" featuring P-Lo this past March.
