Ella Mai is basking in the positive reception her new album Heart On My Sleeve has received since its release at the top of the month. The project has remained in heavy rotation, with a number of tracks worthy of getting the single treatment. While we wait to hear which Heart On My Sleeve songs get the green light next, Ella took her two most recent singles "DFMU" and "Leave You Alone" to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night for a fierce medley.
The "Boo'd Up" singer was done up from head to heels with sleek hair, glam makeup and a dramatic, long sequined cape. She was quite a striking sight on stage as she started her "DFMU" performance perched atop a multi-level white platform with her three-piece band joining her below.
Ella sang the rated PG version of the song for the television audience then smoothly segued into "Leave You Alone" during the chorus. She simultaneously removed the cape to reveal a sexy black catsuit that channeled R&B girls from the '90s.
As Ella got into the Jodeci-sampling jam, she worked the stage, stepping down onto the different levels and giving a little bounce and bop combo. The songstress gave good voice while singing live and had a delightful stage presence, but her performance could have benefitted from background singers and/or dancers to make it a little more exciting.
Ella Mai is just getting started with her Heart On My Sleeve era, so there'll be many more performances on TV and concert stages to come in support of this album. While we wait for a tour announcement, catch Ella's latest appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon right here.
