In 2023, Little Brother will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their debut album, The Listening. That's not the only reason that the group will be popping bottles, though, with the announcement that they have a documentary entitled May The Lord Watch: The Little Brother Story in the works scheduled for release next year with the film's first-look trailer. And, boy, do they have a lot of ground to cover.
The documentary will take a deep dive into Little Brother's past, present and future – the good, the bad and the ugly. Of course, Phonte, Rapper Big Pooh and 9th Wonder's formation as a trio on the campus of North Carolina Central University will be covered, as well as 9th's leaving the group after their classic second album The Minstrel Show was released, the eventual dissolution of LB after years of being a duo and the group's historic reunion and triumphant rebirth.
May The Lord Watch: The Little Brother Story actually takes its name from Pooh and Phonte's 2019 comeback album May The Lord Watch. Much like Little Brother's reunion, this documentary has been years in the making.
Phonte wrote on Instagram about the project, "Been working on this one for 5 years and calling it an 'emotional journey' is a big understatement." Both Tay and Rapper Big Pooh credit Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Questlove as the inspiration behind this documentary coming to light, and he also has a brief cameo in the trailer.
From the looks of the teaser trailer, things are gonna get spicy. We know that 9th Wonder, Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh have quite a history together and things haven't always been sweet. Director Holland Randolph Gallagher will take great care to tell the Little Brother story that fans not only want but need.
