We knew that Syd was up to something when she dropped her singles "Right Track" and "Fast Car" last year. Now we know that the singer-songwriter will be bringing us her sophomore album Broken Hearts Club this April. While announcing the album's impending arrival, she also took the time to drop off its latest single "CYBAH" featuring man of the moment Lucky Daye.
"CYBAH" (which is an acronym for "Could You Break A Heart") is a slow, '80s-inspired groove built upon synths, bass and programmed drums that's akin to something you'd hear from Ready For The World. Syd's song is more tender, however, as she tries to assess if a potential lover is capable of hurting her.
"If I ever make you mine, need to know if you're the type / Do me wrong or do me right," she sings. "Guess you never really know / Gotta watch the other girls / Scared 'bout it down the road." This sentiment is repeated by Lucky, whose aim is to make his girl vow to him that she'll never do him greasy, singing, "Promise me your everything, no matter what they say."
The video for "CYBAH" takes the sentiment to the next level while also playing on the song's title. Syd becomes a scientist literally building the woman of her dreams. However, even with her hands in the creation, she's still skeptical of her dreamlover's intentions as she constantly tweaks her creation. Lucky also appears in the clip, though he doesn't factor much into the visual's overall story. Instead, he provides a bit of support as Syd continues to pursue perfection.
The song and the whole of Broken Hearts Club seem to be inspired by the singer's personal life. "The album is about a relationship I had that ended in my first real broken heart," Syd said in a statement. "It almost felt like I joined a club because all of my friends went through similar experiences. It was like a rite of passage. I started writing the album on the relationship when I was in love. You’re really getting the whole journey from the beginning to the end. I want people to find it beautiful. It’s super vulnerable, sentimental, and it’s soft. There’s touching moments and a couple of dark moments."
We already can't wait to hear what Syd has in store for us when the album is released in its entirety on April 8th. Listen to "CYBAH" and watch its video right here. Then stick around to check out the set's cover art and tracklist, which features guests Kehlani and Smino in addition to Lucky Daye.
