After getting us "Hot Hot" and applying "Pressure," genre-bending British rising star Bree Runway is ready to bring us yet another side of herself. Her latest single "Somebody Like You" is out for the masses to hear, with Bree going full-on power ballad to show us that she's got range.
"Somebody Like You" sounds like it was pulled from the late '80s or '90s thanks to its production. The song is awash in dramatic synths and electric guitar, with the moody sounds echoing throughout. Underscoring this are drums that chug along under the melody before becoming thunderous at the needed times, particularly on the song's epic chorus and bridge.
Bree's vocal is front and center, though, as the singer/rapper belts about the love she's found. "Don't wanna wait 'til morning hours / Don't wanna wait too long, let's dive in," she sings. "'Cause you are such a precious diamond / Imagine finding somebody like you / Somebody like you."
The video for the track matches the song's mood. We see Bree walking among the dimly lit set, which at times feels gothic and at others feels decidedly modern. The artist bridges the two with avant-garde fashions that tread both the spectacular and the simple as she convincingly emotes the song's searing lyrics.
In a statement, the singer called the song, "[a]n ode to my future lover, in a generation where love and relationships have become so transactional." She further elaborated, saying, "...he is also like me, he will see value in a love that can’t be bought, it simply just is. It can be such an empty, soulless generation but in all of that I am still sure there is a precious diamond in all the dirt for me."
Bree Runway is ready to cross the pond in her pursuit to take over the world. She will make her US debut with headlining shows in Los Angeles and New York this May, and we're almost certain a new project from her will be on the way soon.
