SoulBounce Exclusive: Reel People & Raheem DeVaughn Give Us A Soulful Sense Of 'Deja Vu'

Those Reel People have been some kind of busy this past year. This past fall, they released their EP Dancing On The Moon, which housed the Speech-featuring "I Never Knew." The collective isn't done, though, as they're readying another new project for the spring titled Hearts Collide. To help introduce it to the world, they've tapped The Love King himself Raheem DeVaughn for lead single "Deja Vu," the video for which we're happy to premiere right here.

"Deja Vu" is a super soulful song that tracks the history of a love that feels as if it's happened before. Raheem is the perfect man to tell this story, as he adds his own flavor to the dreamy mid-tempo number. "Before I knew your name / Those pretty brown eyes had a song," he sings. "A sweet lullaby / Guess I recognized the melody / Soon as you spoke your name." His voice and these lovely sentiments and couched in dreamy production from RP's Mike Patto, Oli Lazarus and Toni Economides.

They keep the same vibe in the visual for the single. Jeff Conway of pushingnormal creates an animated story that takes us through the decades as a pair of lovers meets in the '60s, '70s and '80s while falling in love again and again. They keep having the same meet cute — with her dropping a flyer and him picking up it up — which leads to them dancing the night away and eventually sharing a kiss. Raheem's animated visage is there to watch it all unfold (and looking exceptionally cool while doing it) as he pushes period appropriate whips before finally meeting up with Reel People at the video's close to strike a pose before the scene fades to black.

"It's always been an ambition of ours to collaborate with The Love King of R&B, Raheem DeVaughn," Reel People told us. "With us based in London and Raheem in DC, we worked online to make the song happen. And when Raheem sent over his vocals, we immediately knew we had something really special. With the logistics again (plus throwing the global pandemic into the mix), we all decided it would be a great time to have a fully animated music video for the first time in Reel People’s and Raheem’s catalog of music."

Hearts Collide is set to release next month and, in addition to "Deja Vu," will contain two new songs from the collective featuring Atlanta-based vocalist Paula. And from what they tell us, there's even more to come in 2021. You can check out our exclusive premiere of the video for "Deja Vu" below. If you're diggin' what you hear and see (and let's be honest, you are), you can head here to save and pick up you own copy of the single.
