Cecily & Muhsinah Call On The Divine In 'Spirit Tell Me'

Singer-songwriter Cecily has had a pretty busy year. She dropped off her Awakening, Pt.1 EP in summer 2019 and then followed that feat up this year with short film The Visual EP and a reimagined video for her single "Clumsy." The D.C.-based artist is showing no signs of slowing, though, as she prepares to release her latest project Awakening, Pt. 2 in the near future. In preparation of that, she's releasing her newest single and video "Spirit Tell Me."

"Spirit Tell Me" is a collaboration between Cecily and fellow DMV singer-songwriter Muhsinah that finds the ladies calling on the divine to guide them through the uncertainty of life. Cecily does the singing here, with her voice carried by melodic piano played by Muhsinah. "Spirit tell me where to go / To get myself out this hole," she sings. "Tell me where to go / Are my dreams too bold?" The song addresses the struggle of trying to find one's way but also offers a comforting assurance as Cecily is willing to accept whatever answer she receives.

The video for the song, while not a narrative one, helps tell the story of the lyrics. We see Cecily gorgeously dressed in looks that involve gauzy fabrics and cowrie shells while honoring the divine within herself and her ancestors. Muhsinah, meanwhile, holds things down while sitting at the piano and allowing Cecily to shine.

"Muhsinah and I had our first-ever songwriting session just a few weeks before the lockdown began. We wrote 'Spirit Tell Me' in about 90 minutes, and we both felt it was a powerful song," Cecily said in a press release. "Due to the pandemic, I had decided to delay releasing any new music until 2021, but woke up one morning in June in the midst of the global public health crisis, economic uncertainty and an unprecedented movement for racial justice, I knew this was a song that needed to be shared before the end of the year. I knew that this song of hope was desperately needed, especially now."

"Spirit Tell Me" definitely has us hopeful for both what's to come and Awakening, Pt. 2. The singer hasn't revealed exactly when we can expect her new project, but if it's up to the quality of "Spirit Tell Me," it will be well worth the wait.
