Amber Mark Offers A Searing Cover Of 'I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City'

Amber Mark has been offering unique takes on classic songs all year long thanks to her "COVERED-19" series. Perhaps that's why the up-and-comer was tapped to contribute another cover to new Netflix series Grand Army, for which Amber offers her take on Harry Nilsson's 1969 song "I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City."

The show, about high school life in Brooklyn, is full of angsty teenage drama. For her take on the song, Amber reinterpreted the original's folk-rock sound into a dramatic ballad. That means stripping away the twangy guitar for organ, saxophone, snare and strings. The switch up adds a gravitas to the affair and a slight somberness to the lyrics. But as the song progresses and the vocal climax approaches, a hope is instilled as she sings of arriving in the place she feels she belongs. "Well, here I am, Lord, knockin' at your back door," she sings. "Ain't it wonderful to be where I've always wanted to be?/ For the first time, I'll breathe free / In New York City."

Amber Mark has been bringing it this year and letting her talent truly shine. Here's hoping that she'll be giving us even more in 2021. Listen to her take on "I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City."
