We're in the middle of a nationwide shutdown due to an unprecedented pandemic. Despite that fact, we've been seeing a heck of a lot of Anthony Hamilton as he's supported several causes that hope to aid in the COVID-19 relief efforts. Somehow, he also found some time to hit the studio and is sharing with us the product of those efforts with his newest single "Back Together."
The singer-songwriter gets to make his musical dreams come true as "Back Together" is a duet of sorts with one of his musical heroes, Rick James. "Growing up listening to 'Super Freak' and 'Fire and Desire' made it impossible not to want to sing. This is when I knew Rick James would be an all-time favorite," he revealed in a press statement. Helping him realize this dream is producer 9th Wonder, who flipped a sample of "Fire and Desire" to create the effect of Anthony and Rick crooning together over a hip-hop soul groove. Meanwhile, Anthony utilizes his pen game to make the track about begging his girl to realize he's the one and come back home. "Can we just get back together? / All those lovely nights together / I thought love should last forever / Through it all," he sings in a way sure to win back her heart.
"To me, it’s also about love and getting back together with someone you knew was special," Anthony said of the song's meaning. "In this time of COVID-19, it took on a new meaning too. It means getting back to our lives. Be close to those who are special to you. We all want to be close to anybody right now."
"Back Together" is also the first release from his My Music Box label, a partnership with BMG that will also see the release of his forthcoming new album this summer. Looks like we'll be seeing a lot more of him — and we don't mind that one bit. Listen to Anthony Hamilton and Rick James collaborate through the decades by giving "Back Together" a spin.
