Ciara Celebrates Her 'Melanin' With Help From Lupita Nyong'o, Ester Dean, City Girls & La La Anthony

Ciara
wants women of color around the world to celebrate their Black Girl Maagic with her new posse cut “Melanin.” The “Girl Gang” singer has invited some assorted flavors from across the diaspora to help her celebrate everything black and beautiful, including rappers City Girls, writer and singer Easter Dean, and Hollywood starlets La La Anthony and Lupita Nyong’o. Yes, Ciara got Lupita out here spitting bars for real and not for play play.

Of the track, CiCi said, “This is ultimately an anthem of self-love, which is a journey I’ve been on since my Beauty Marks album. It celebrates the beautiful shades of culture that comprise the inner and outer beauty of everyone. Embracing the unique nature of our skin tones threads together the tapestry of humankind.”

Produced by Dean, “Melanin” is an upbeat, frenetic old school 808 bass track that is reminiscent of a school yard chant, something that little Black girls would sing while playing hopscotch or jumping rope. Just check the chorus: “Ugh that’s that melanin / Yeah That’s that chocolate chocolate / Ugh! Yeah we killin’ them / With all that chocolate chocolate,” Ester exuberantly sings. Each of the ladies in the melanated cypher delivers a fun verse, especially Lupita who give us a nice little old school flow. But we have to give up for JT of City Girls who sums everything up quite nicely when she spits, “I'm a bad chick with a lace or a fro.”

Ciara has promised that a video for the track is on the way. All we have to say is that Future and Sienna's mama and the ladies better show up and show out for the culture. Until then, hit play below to hear this new girl power anthem.
