Lizzo Made The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards Feel 'Good As Hell'

With MTV pretty much relegating their videos to the wee hours of the morning, you might find it odd that they still go through with the pomp and circumstance of their annual Video Music Awards. We're also in that number. However, we were pleasantly reminded of how big a showcase of talent it can be when stars bring their A-game to the stage. That includes the big and beautiful Lizzo, who brought the night's first moment of joy with a medley of her hit single "Truth Hurts" and her anthem "Good As Hell."

Taking the stage while in front of a jiggling CGI booty, she rocked through her two-year old hit single "Truth Hurts like it was brand new while the crowd — which included Queen LatifahTaylor Swift and other notables — cheered her on. The performance was full of twerking and ass shaking (what is a Lizzo performance without it?) that injected a bit of energy into the proceedings. She then surprisingly reached into her back catalog for 2016 single "Good As Hell." Though it wasn't expected, she rocked the feel-good anthem while preaching self-love and acceptance and eventually taking us all the way to church at the song's climax.

We were definitely expecting to rock to her "Tempo" or any of the number of cuts on Cuz I Love You, but we're happy that Lizzo decided to give us a bona fide moment instead. If you had any doubt of her staying power, she proved that she's way more than a flavor of the moment. In case you missed her bringing her own brand of black girl magic to the VMAs stage, you can watch her performance in full in the video below.
