DJ Cassidy is always good for delivering at least one collaborative jam to catch our attention on a yearly basis. In 2016, he gave us the disco-fied "Kill The Lights" and then turned around and dropped the vibe-y The Get Down cut "Honor" last year. But with 2018 almost over, we were becoming worried that we wouldn't be getting anything new from Cassidy's corner before the year was up. Thankfully, he comes through in the clutch with his Justine Skye collaboration "Coolin' By My Side."
The inspiration for the track is a relatively simple idea. "In all my travel, I’ve realized the jaw-dropping places I get to play around the world are simply not as fun if I don’t have someone to share them with," Cassidy told Billboard about the track. To that effect, he creates an uncharacteristically sparse groove anchored by slick bass and filled out with airy synths. It allows space for Justine to step in and tell a story about finding love at a singles resort. Her tale of fast love and an instant connection is romantic with just the right amount of edge thanks to Justine's unique style. It informs her delivery and ability to ride the simple groove with a practiced confidence that invites the listener in. She also gets the song's message across quite effortlessly on the chorus, singing, "All these party vibes / Within these party lives are cool / But they’ll be cooler with you coolin’ by my side."
While this collaboration seems to be a one-off for DJ Cassidy, Justine Skye has much more in store as she's readying a new EP set to arrive at the top of the year. Before that happens, though, chill out to "Coolin' By My Side" below.
