It seems like this summer has zoomed by, but thankfully we still have a little over a month to bask in the greatest season of the year. And what's hot fun in the summertime without some hot music as the soundtrack. Our girl Shay Lia has us covered on that front with her second single of the year "Funky Thang."
She once again works with producer Kaytranada, whom she's collaborated with on tracks like "Leave Me Alone" and recent single "Cherish," to capture the feeling of the season. He provides with a bit of his signature sound, incorporating wavy synths, elastic bass and shuffling, frenetic percussion. Outside of the funky rhythm, Shay Lia also keeps it funky with the lyrics. Despite the upbeat feel of the music, the track is essentially a kiss off. "Give me back my time / Thought you would be mine / Didn't see it coming / Guess I'll have to change my plans," she sings in the first verse before questioning why the next girl is so much different from here. But after that, she's ready to move on to dance her cares away on the dance floor, dismissing it all with an "it's all right." It's there that things begin to swing as the picks up just a hair and we're called to jam with "oohs" whirling through the air.
Without a doubt, this is just the tune to get us moving for the rest of the summer. It would also be a perfect fit for the rumored EP she's been working that may or may not materialize before the year is up. Get your dance on when you give Shay Lia's "Funky Thang" a spin below.
