At one point, it looked as if we would never again be blessed with new music from legendary lyricist Skillz. Though he kept us dancing with his DJ sets, entertained us on social media and made us proud upon hearing the news of his position as the first artist-in-residence at University of Richmond's School of Professional and Continuing Studies, given the current state of hip-hop we longed for a break from the status quo. Well, it seems the anti-mumble rap gods were listening as VA’s finest has finally released a new track entitled "In A Minute" and an entertaining visual to go with it.
While the content of his single “In A Minute” is top-notch slick-talkin’, the Viznik-directed video is a throwback to The Whisper’s video for their 1983 jam "Keep On Lovin’ Me." This classic visual has influenced plenty of feel-good foolery (cc: Zo!’s "We Are On The Move" video featuring Eric Roberson, Phonte and bassist Darion Alexander), and the laughs are non-stop each time an artist or their fans do their take.
Produced by DJ Buddha, Andrew “Hitz” Phillips and DJ Class, this summertime banger marks Skillz’s first release aside from his year-end “Rap-Ups” since his 2014 album Made In Virginia. Still, he stays booked and busy with DJing, teaching and ghostwriting gigs, and it seems he’s still got plenty left in the tank when it comes to creating music. While there’s no word on whether this latest offering is a sign of more music to come, we’re grateful to one of our Top 10 MCs for his contribution to our Summer ’18 playlist.
Dust off that tweed suit and those platforms, pick out your 'fro and get your two-step on to Skillz's “In a Minute” and watch the video for a hearty laugh.
