Revel In Prince's Original Recording Of 'Nothing Compares 2 U'

This past Saturday marked the second anniversary of Prince's untimely passing. While for some it was a somber day, others chose to celebrate the life, legacy and talent that the legend left behind. In tribute to him, Prince's estate released a couple gems to remember him by — the previously unheard studio recording of his hit song "Nothing Compares 2 U" and the official video consisting of never-before-seen rehearsal footage of the artist and his then-band The Revolution from the summer of 1984.

"Nothing Compares 2 U," which he originally wrote for protégés The Family, took off in 1990 when it was covered by Irish firebrand Sinead O'Connor and became a hit. However, if you've ever seen him cover the song live, you know that nobody can do the song justice quite like Prince can. This studio version proves that as his Purpleness renders the song with an aching loneliness and allows space for the song to breathe and grow, even adding a sax solo towards the middle. Quite honestly, though Sinead's will perhaps always be the best-known take on the track, this is by far the definitive version of the song. Though the rehearsal footage isn't of Prince and The Revolution performing the track, it is a glimpse into the amazing work ethic that went into his stage shows as it honestly looks like a full-out concert and not them practicing to rock the crowd.

We don't know if we'll ever truly get over Prince leaving us so soon, but gems like this and the promise of more to be revealed definitely has us grateful to have even gotten the chance to experience someone like him in our lifetime. Check out the only studio recording of Prince's version of "Nothing Compares 2 U," which is available to purchase now digitally and will also be made available on 7-inch vinyl and picture disc as well, below and get a load of the official video below.
