Issa Rae’s dramedy Insecure has one of the best soundtracks on television. Thanks to legendary producer Raphael Saadiq and music supervisor Kier Lehman we’ve been treated to variety of bangers from today’s best, brightest and overlooked artists. However, few have helped underscore the emotional resonance of the show like the first lady of TDE, SZA. Rae has even admitted that SZA’s music inspired the show’s score and that her entire CTRL album could be on the hit HBO drama. It’s only right that the patron saint of Black Girl Magic drop an original track for the Insecure soundtrack with the new song “Quicksand."
“Quicksand” is about being stuck in a tough position when it comes to love. “I’m scared of love / And you’re hard to trust,” SZA wails on the chorus against a haze of synths that bring an ‘80s new wave meets modern R&B vibe. The wavy track lulls us into SZA’s feelings of anguish and ecstasy. She questions her lover's motives, her own motives and whether it’s all much ado about nothing. In the end, despite their problems she can’t deny her feelings.
In addition to this new jam for Insecure, SZA recently collaborated with Maroon 5 on the track “What Lovers Do,” and she's working on releasing a deluxe edition of her smash debut album. Meanwhile, Issa, Molly and the rest of their dysfunctional friends are wrapping up season two of Insecure on Sunday night, with season three coming in 2018.
