Alessia Cara Returns To Her Acoustic Roots With Cover Of SZA's 'Drew Barrymore'

If you've been following Alessia Cara since before she signed with a label, then you may remember that she got her start posting cover songs to YouTube. That was years ago when she was in her teens, and now the 21-year-old has her hit debut album, Know-It-All, and two recently awarded MTV Video Music Awards under her belt. Now, Cara surprises us with something new and returns to her roots in the process with her latest, an acoustic cover of SZA's "Drew Barrymore."

SZA's own debut album, CTRL, has been a highlight of 2017 and proven to be the gift that keeps on giving with numerous artists finding inspiration in the alt-soul, emo #BlackGirlMagic soundtrack. Oddly enough, the TDE bombshell has been covered by a number of male artists so far, including Miguel, Khalid and Eric Bellinger. Their songs of choice to remake have been "The Weekend" and "Love Galore." However, for her chance at bat, Alessia Cara decides to tackle "Drew Barrymore" instead and brings a refreshing take on the melancholy introspective track.

Cara's rendition of "Drew Barrymore" is largely unchanged from SZA's original. Accompanied by just an acoustic guitar, the song sounds sweet, light and airy in her hands. If SZA's affected voice and delivery aren't your type of hype, then hearing Alessia's remake may be more pleasing to your ears.

Alessia posted this track to her YouTube account over the weekend with the caption, "had this laying around for a bit so I decided to post it. this album is magic." Indeed it is, and so is this cover.
