It's been well over a year since Chaka Khan released "I Love Myself," but the timeless diva is doing all she can to ensure her message of self-love and acceptance keeps going. A few weeks ago, she resuscitated the empowering anthem with a little help from the song's co-producer/co-writer B. Slade. And now she's released the accompanying visual along with new soulful house remixes from West coast duo DJ Sidney Perry and Ranti Malone for Qubonix Productions.
For the simple, but effective video concept, director Seth Neblett creates an overall feeling of friendly intimacy. Set in her home dressing room, Chaka sits in front of a mirror doling out nuggets of wisdom, but it feels as if we're right in the frame with her having a heart-to-heart. Photos of the stunning icon at various stages of her life and career lend a bit of nostalgia while shots of B. Slade add some futuristic flair. But perhaps the most endearing portion of the short film are the moments that feature the winners of Khan's "I Love Myself" video contest. Some stop by her dressing room for a surprise visit while others make cameos via the "Chakagram" app. We also get to see the diva serve some Afrocentric realness with a natural look and African garb. In a final moment of transparency, she reveals a personal note-to-self signed with her birth name "Yvette."
In a press statement, the legend revealed that “the lyrics to 'I Love Myself' give voice to the deeply personal and continuing journey of my life and the obstacles I continue to overcome both publicly and privately." After enduring the pain of losing her longtime friends Prince, Natalie Cole and Maurice White last year, she went on to share how the song became even more personal. “Having come through all those things deepens the already universal message of “I Love Myself” for me in ways I couldn’t have imagined a year ago when the song was originally slated for release. Loving yourself is a life-long process and even more so in the face of loss.”
This Independence Day, as you watch the video and stream the house remixes for "I Love Myself" below, why not celebrate the freedom that comes with self-acceptance and self-love. The original song and The Remixes are both available for purchase via iTunes. After taking a couple of days to recoup from her epic appearance at this past weekend's 2017 ESSENCE Festival, Chaka Khan will resume her European tour.
