India Shawn, REM & Childish Major Ponder 'What Love Is'

Los Angeles-born singer/songwriter India Shawn has worked her magic once again on an already certified jam. For her cover of the Matt Martians (of The Internet fame) song “What Love Is,” she teams up with singer/songwriter/drummer REM aka Remey Williams and Atlanta-based producer Childish Major to put a nice bossa-nova type spin on the track. The talented threesome remove some of the aggression felt in the original but leave all of the soul intact. The drum kicks play the background while soft and melodic piano chords smooth it all out. Add India’s angelic vocals in harmony with REM, and you have just what you need to wind down at the end of the day. The vibe is awakened just a bit with a few trap-style bars, adding a touch of edge, making this rendition all the more interesting.

India Shawn has made quite a name for herself with her ability to recreate songs with one swipe of her vocal wand. She seems to know exactly how to choose her creative partners, as each of her collaborations, including those with James Fauntleroy, have been golden. Her previous single "Galaxies" reminded of what she’s capable of on her own, and might have given us a glimpse of what’s to come. She's said to be currently working on her forthcoming solo album, which promises to deliver “awesomely good songs that are relevant, transparent, and exciting.” Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long, as this project sounds like just the sort of refreshing musical newness we could all use.

Cool out on this last day of spring, and give India Shawn’s cover of Matt Martians' “What Love Is” featuring REM and Childish Major a spin right here.
