6LACK Just Wants To Be 'Free'

Typically, we don’t associate freedom with trips down rabbit holes. In fact, tight, dark, sensibility-violating zones are the antithesis of being free. But that’s exactly what singer, songwriter and rapper Ricardo Valdez Valentine, better known by his stage name 6LACK (pronounced as Black), has asked us to take. The new video for his single “Free” is a journey to the bizarre; an uncomfortable peek at a hard-to-turn-away-from nightmare. All the trappings of an outré visual experience, cold, damn near pitch black spaces - clouded with fog and odd props - spark "what the heck is going on here" thoughts. It takes a few moments to take it all in, but a kidnapping in progress slowly comes into focus. A crazed fan needs 6LACK on much more than a playlist. Whoa.

But that’s the appeal of 6LACK for ya. Ever since his debut album, FREE 6LACK, dropped in late 2016, his moody vocals have taken us to murky worlds of sex, love and industry woes. The singer’s tone, oozing afterglow supine, is hard to resist. Come on, we know some of the best conversations occur in that realm. And that’s exactly what “Free” and the album’s previous releases "hear" like: conversations. “PRBLMS” is a firm middle finger. “Ex Calling” will have listeners sympathizing for whoever the woman is. It’s all about love on “Gettin Old,” and 6LACK is extra cocky on “Luving U.” The last cut on the album, “Alone/EA6,” is 6LACK’s nine-minute biography. You’ll be real clear about who he is in the world.
