If you are like me, you have struggled with skin issues at some point in your life. I have suffered from hormonal imbalances, and it would show up all over my face. This month, I’d like to share with you some of the tips and tricks that have helped me to achieve a healthy and glowing complexion.

Acne has been an unwanted companion my entire life. I've tried almost every product on the market. With each visit to the dermatologist and aesthetician, I learned more and more about my skin. Nonetheless, the acne persisted. That is until my recent weight loss journey revealed that my hormones were going crazy because of my unhealthy diet. The decision to start eating clean, taking supplements and pampering myself and my skin, more than any product or service, has helped me to effectively control breakouts.

Instead of eating lots of bad fats, fatty proteins and carbohydrates, I load up on fruits and vegetables, cut down on the red meat and cut back on my sugar intake. I increased my water intake as well. I now drink about a gallon or so a day. I also infused my diet with supplements that boost skin health and diminish the signs of aging like omega-3 fatty acids, primrose oil, maca powder, biotin, collagen with vitamin C and hyaluronic acid. I also protect myself from prolonged sun exposure. I use 50 SPF every day to limit the negative effects of the sun on my skin.

Another key to healthy beautiful skin is avoiding obvious harmful habits like smoking and consuming large amounts of alcohol. Something I also avoid is perhaps the less obvious aging accelerator: stress. There is no question that minimizing stress, reduces the risks of premature aging.

I will never forget the time that I was having a make-up consultation and met an African American woman with absolutely beautiful skin. I could tell that she was older, but I couldn’t guess her exact age. We all started talking skincare and the sales representative asked her how old she was. She proudly said, “63!” I couldn’t believe my eyes. I asked her how her she kept her skin so smooth and wrinkle free.  She said, ”Darling, the number one secret to beautiful skin is living your life stress-free. I ain’t got time for no mess in my life.”

You know what? She was right. One of the most important things I did for my skin was to remove stressful people, places and situations from my life, and it's showed. I can’t count the number of compliments I get on my “great looking skin” these days.

With the breakouts managed, I have shifted my focus to healing the scars and blemishes that years of acne have left behind. My amazing dermatologist changed my life. He put me on a great cleansing regimen that also helped lighten and exfoliate my skin naturally. He also taught me how to moisturize my skin and gave me the right creams to use to maintain my skin without burning or scarring it further.
