In 2015, Jidenna had the song of the summer with “Classic Man.” A certified jam, the song went platinum and cold rocked parties wherever it was played. In addition to his own hit single, Jidenna was a force to be reckoned with behind the scenes, helping produce the Wondaland Records project The Eephus, including mentor Janelle Monáe’s highest charting single, “Yoga.” He even appeared on a couple episodes of Issa Rae’s phenomenal HBO series, Insecure.
However, Jidenna hasn’t been able to get it poppin’ with the music the way “Classic Man” did. It hasn’t been for lack of trying, though. The star-in-the-making has impressed us with the singles like the catchy “Knickers” and the Caribbean-tinged “Little Bit More.” Unfortunately, his clatchet (classy + ratchet) stylings, along with his “chief” aesthetic, haven’t caught on with audiences the way we expected. However, we still think there’s some promises left for Jidenna to take his place in the limelight in 2017. It’s time for the “Classic Man” to make good on the promise of his hit single with a full project that showcases the gamut of the man’s talent and his vision. — Ken
