Since we first caught wind of BET’s upcoming miniseries, The New Edition Story , this past summer, the network (as well as the cast and crew) has been baiting us with preview trailers, behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage and music production credits. Their lengthy roll-out has worked so far, because fans (including us here at SoulBounce) have been quite vocal in their support of the three-night biopic centering on the legendary R&B group. Well, last night’s Soul Train Awards 2016 further fanned the flames of our excitement with a series of promos and a group appearance that included a mix of New Edition members (Bell Biv DeVoe and Bobby Brown) and The New Edition Story castmates (Bryshere Gray, Elijah Kelley, Keith Powers, Luke James and Woody McClain — Algee Smith wasn’t there for the festivities).
The true NE highlight of the evening, however, was an exclusive music video of “You’re Not My Kind of Girl” that aired right after the ceremony ended. The cast of the upcoming project performs a darn near perfect remake of the original video with intriguing acting clips interspersed throughout. Their crisp military garb (An Officer and a Gentleman, anyone?) and precise choreography took us back in time and had many of us swooning and screaming along with the women in the crowd. We’ll be glued to our televisions when The New Edition Story airs January 24th-26th, 2017 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT on BET. In the meantime, watch the music video below then keep scrolling to see how it compares to the original with Ralph Tresvant and Johnny Gill on lead.
