Shortly after we rang in the new year, producer/singer/songwriter Aaron Taylor introduced himself as a solo artist with his impressive debut EP Still Life. And with the impending release of his follow-up project Better Days, he's clearly intent on closing out the year with just as much shine. After making us bounce with his hopeful anthem "Be Alright," we're excited to world premiere an exlcusive listen of "Breakfast" before the full album drops tomorrow.
The song's intro is a cavalier command, "Get up and make me breakfast!" Excuse you?! Faster than you can fire your side-eye laser beam, it segues into a bassline so funky that all is quickly forgiven. He tries again, but with a different approach this time: "You ain't gotta make me breakfast in the morning," he sings before adding with a wink, "but I'd like it if you could." Melodically sexy with a hint of playful mischief, it's impossible to thwart the advances of his tantalizing falsetto -- especially when supported by dynamic instrumentals. Punctuated by crisp background vocal harmonies, the unrelenting stank of the bass, rhythmic pulse of the drums, electric flash of the guitar, Rhodes-flavored keys and brilliant bursts of horns combine to deliver satisfyingly groovy arrangement.
Expounding on the song's theme, Taylor offers, “Breakfast allegorically details the need for receiving love in the way we like and need. Love is a strange thing. Our definitions of it differ and yet we claim to give and receive the same thing.”
Based on what we've heard so far, it's sounding like we're going to love Better Days when we finally get our hands on it tomorrow. In the meantime, enjoy a few helpings of "Breakfast" and peep the album's track listing below. Afterwards, visit Aaron Taylor's website or follow him on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for updates.
