On Sunday, September 18th, the Common Culture: Across the Water concert will take place in Los Angeles at the newly renovated Ford Theatres in Hollywood. Common Culture is an event presented by Mama Earth, a Los Angeles-based global community organization, and will celebrate the intersections of island culture in Los Angeles, bring together various styles of music with dance and honor living legends, "El Maestro" Lazaro Galarraga and Afrodyete.
The historic outdoor venue's stage will host performances by headliners Chloe x Halle, Mark de Clive-Lowe and his wife Nia Andrews, Jungle Fire featuring honoree Afrodyete and Allensworth and Brit Manor featuring Captain Planet. Also performing will be dancers Kimberly Miguel Mullen, Kati Hernandez and Nonosina who will interlace traditional Cuban and Polynesian movement and drums into the show.
The elders being honored are local music legends Lazaro Galarraga, a native of Cuba and Inglewood resident who has championed Afro-Cuban music, culture and folklore, and Afrodyete, a singer/songwriter who is the lead vocalist with funk band Breakestra.
