Adding a touch of jazz to the 2016 Summer Spirit Festival lineup was celebrated singer Gregory Porter. The GRAMMY winner and his band kicked things off with "Holding On," taken from his current album Take Me To the Alley. Porter dipped back to his 2011 breakthrough album, Be Good, for the song "On My Way To Harlem" before bringing us back to the present with "Take Me To the Alley." Gregory then skipped through the decades and dug deep in the crates to sing a cover of "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" by The Temptations. More current tracks followed before he ended with "1960 What?" to the delight of his true blue fans.
Gregory Porter sounded amazing as always, but the majority of the audience seemed a bit disconnected from his performance. Perhaps if he had performed remixes or more upbeat arrangements, he would have appealed more to this crowd who was there to party.
