Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are known for their modern take on old school soul and lead singer Sharon Jones' powerful vocals. But for the band, there was nothing to sing about when Sharon was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and their soul train came to a sudden halt. Filmmaker Barbara Kopple was there to document the entire process, which has become the documentary Miss Sharon Jones! At the top of the month, we brought you the doc's official trailer, and now we're honored to bring you an exclusive clip from the highly anticipated film.
Finding out that Sharon had cancer certainly derailed the band's plans. However, even with a diagnosis as serious as stage 2 pancreatic cancer, in show business, the show must go on. We witness that adage in action in the clip as Sharon joins the band for her first rehearsal since undergoing surgery and chemotherapy. Her head freshly shaved and a smile on her face, the happy but visibly tired singer does a run-through of the band's 2008 single "Tell Me." Though she's holding back and her voice is noticeably not at 100 percent, you can still feel its power and the positive, family-like vibes in the rehearsal room.
There are plenty of moments like this in the film, which not only explores how Sharon handles the cancer diagnosis, but shows how it affects her friends and the band. If you've ever wanted to get to know more about Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings or just want to watch a triumphant, true-to-life story on the big screen, Miss Sharon Jones! is definitely a must-see. The film opens in New York City today and in Los Angeles on August 5th, with a nationwide expansion throughout the month of August.
