Electro-pop duo AlunaGeorge is currently prepping to release their second album, I Remember and finalizing their plans for world domination. We’ve been eagerly awaiting their sophomore album for a while now and September 16th can’t come fast enough. Of course, the group has released their fair share of singles to tide us over, and they have now blessed us with the visuals for their latest single "Mean What I Say" featuring femcees Dreezy and Leikeli47.
In the clip, Aluna Francis and her girls ride out to an abandoned water park in the desert. While all the fun and games are either locked up or destroyed, the ladies make their own fun, doing their best dance moves from your favorite ‘90s videos that also took place in the desert. (Queen Mother Janet Jackson would be proud.) Everyone is styled fresh to def in throwback duds, as if the end of the world took place right after Krush Groove was released in theaters.
Not to be outdone, Aluna’s co-stars in the video and on the track, Dreezy and Leikeli47, don’t just play the background but stand out in their own right. Chicago spitter Dreezy shines in the high noon sun in a bikini top and vinyl jacket against a graffiti covered backdrop. Meanwhile, NYC-representer Leikeli47 brings the pain in yet another amazing face mask hat – this one red with a opening for her side braid and ponytails, perfect for the hood fab goon-on-the-go who doesn’t want to sacrifice their swag or whimsy just because they’re pulling a heist. Cleo from Set It Off could never.
Overall, the clip for “Mean What I Mean” is a fun piece of cinema that feels like many popular videos from the ‘80s and ‘90s. While there is no engrossing plot or huge message the video is trying to convey, it does succeed in presenting Aluna and friends as being young and carefree, while at the same damn time bold and powerful young women.
