Though we haven't heard much from Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings since it was announced that Sharon's cancer had returned, the soul purveyors have remained on our minds and in our hearts. So imagine the pleasant surprise of seeing Sharon and her band pop up in a slick commercial for the Lincoln MKZ. And we say commercial, what we really mean is a nearly three-minute music video showcasing the band (with a few added guests) showing why they're the best at what they do.
For their grand return into the public eye, they rightfully choose to cover the Allman Brothers classic "Midnight Rider," and do it more than justice. In a room stylishly illuminated by sunlight bleeding in from behind closed curtains, the band lays down solid layers of funk, soul and '70s-styled rock for Sharon to strut out to in a shimmery black-and-silver sequined dress as she shakes her shimmy and delivers one hell of an electrifying vocal.
As the party gets jumping, we're transported to a road by the oceanside as Matthew McConaughey knowingly looks at the camera and the company's tag line, "It's Like That," appears on the screen. While we do like the sly way the commercial brought it back to the product, we could've done with just a few more moments of Sharon and the Dap-Kings working it out.
We've really missed having a talent like Sharon's around and it's quite nice to see her back in her element. Luckily we'll get to see more, as the upcoming doc on the singer, Miss Sharon Jones!, is set to be released on July 29th. Check out Sharon and the Dap-Kings making musical magic in the ad below.
